Advanced Figure Painting Class
1. Two long poses. The poses will extend for five or six three-hour sessions, so we’ll really have a chance to create a highly finished painting. We’ll also do some five-minute quick poses to be able to capture the gesture quickly.
2. Multi-figure compositions. I’ve heard Vern Swanson of the Springville Museum of Art say that Utah is full of “One-Figure Wonders”–meaning artists often revert to painting works with a single human figure. We’re going to work on a multi-figure painting and homework exercises to help develop the ability to compose from memory and imagination as a foundation for creating great reference-based work.
3. Finishing work off so it’s gallery ready. We’ll do an art show at the end of the class with our finished pieces. There will be a lot of homework to get these pieces finished in time.
This class will be held in the art shop across the street to the East of the Springville Museum of Art. You must be 18 or older to participate. Four months go by quickly–here are some things we’ll focus on:
a. how to accurately paint the human figure
b. how to use temperature shifts to paint better flesh tones
c. how to use hard and soft edges to create emphasis and atmosphere
d. how to use value and color to create freaking awesome compositional eyepaths
e. how to compose with multiple figures in a single work
f. how to create convincing surfaces
g. how to push and pull surfaces in the picture plane
Please email me if you have any questions. It’s not too late to jump in.
